BPC-157

Also known as: Body Protection Compound 157, PL-10

BPC-157 is a synthetic 15-amino acid pentadecapeptide derived from the human gastric Body Protection Compound (BPC). Extensively studied in animal models for its regenerative, gastroprotective, and anti-inflammatory properties. One of the most popular research peptides in the sports and regenerative medicine field.

Mechanism of action

It acts through multiple signaling pathways:

  • Upregulation of growth factors: VEGF (angiogenesis), EGF and FGF
  • Activation of the nitric oxide (NO) pathway, promoting vasodilation and tissue perfusion
  • Modulation of dopaminergic and serotonergic systems
  • Inhibition of pro-inflammatory mediators (TNF-α, IL-6)
  • Stimulation of fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis

Uses & indications

  • Soft tissue healing: Tendons, ligaments (Achilles tendon rupture, rotator cuff injuries)
  • Muscle regeneration after injury or surgery
  • Gastroprotection: Gastric ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease
  • Neuroprotection: Brain and spinal cord injuries (animal studies)
  • Scar tissue reduction

Effects

Beneficial (in animal models): Accelerated tendon and ligament healing, significant reduction in inflammatory markers, documented gastroprotective properties, potential neuroprotective effects.

Reported adverse effects: Minimal in animal studies. No significant systemic toxicity at standard doses. In humans: data limited to anecdotal reports; mild nausea in some cases.

Considerations & contraindications

  • Not approved by FDA or EMA for human therapeutic use
  • All solid clinical evidence comes from animal models
  • Human trials are scarce and of low methodological quality
  • Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Consult a medical professional before any use

Regulatory approval

Research peptide. Not approved for clinical use in any country. Limited Phase I/II human trials. Pliva (Croatia) conducted preliminary studies.

Dosage

Research use: 1–10 μg/kg. Anecdotal human exploratory dose: 200–500 μg/day (sc or im). Typical cycles: 4–12 weeks.

Storage

Lyophilized: store at −20°C, protect from light and moisture. Reconstituted: 4°C, use within 4–6 weeks. Avoid freeze-thaw cycles.
